In Memoriam - Alan Ferguson

The SAPF is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Ferguson.

Alan was President of the South African Powerlifting Federation for many years from the early 1990's, was the founder and first President of the African Powerlifting Federation (APF) and served on the IPF Executive Committee as Vice President and Board member for Africa.

Alan's commitment and contribution to the sport of powerlifting at local, regional and international level was unsurpassed, and was recognised by him being inducted into the IPF Hall of Fame, the APF Hall of Fame, and being awarded Honorary Membership of the SAPF.

Alan's competitive powerlifting career brought him multiple SA National Championship titles and records, as well as four IPF World Masters Championship titles and a few World records.

Always committed to fair play and with a steadfast commitment to clean sport, Alan worked tirelessly to promote anti-doping throughout his tenure. He was always willing to provide advice and encouragement and was a fount of knowledge to new lifters, coaches, referees and administrators in the sport. He was a mentor, teacher and friend to generations of powerlifters.

Ours is a strength sport, and Alan displayed strength in every way possible, both in his achievements on the platform, his accomplishments in the strengthening our sport's governing structures, and in his strength of character.

We will remember Alan with affection, huge respect and ongoing gratitude for a lifetime of service to Powerlifting, and he will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, Alan.
